The river is named after the Ruhr area. The region is synonymous with many highways and a bleak, smoky industrial area, which has received the telling nickname of Kohlenpott from the Germans. Nowadays, most blast furnaces and mines are closed. Factories have been renovated, the smoke has blown away, and the noise has quieted down.
