The Saarburg is the ruin of a high castle on a southern mountain spur of the Schloßberg, which is 206.5 m above sea level, above the town of Saarburg in the Trier-Saarburg district of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is one of the oldest high castles in western Germany.
The castle, which was presumably built in the 10th century, is first mentioned in a document in the year 964. In that year, it was granted as a feudal estate by the Archbishopric of Trier to Count Siegfried of Luxembourg. After the death of Siegfried's son Adelbero in 1046, the castle reverted to the Archbishopric of Trier.
