Alken is a town in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and is part of the district of Mayen-Koblenz. Alken has a population of 662 inhabitants. The town is an Ortsgemeinde and is part of the Verbandsgemeinde Rhein-Mosel. The town lies on the Moselle River, and above the town is the Thurant Castle.
According to archaeological findings, it seems that there was a Roman settlement. However, the village of Alken has been mentioned since the 10th century. Around 1197, the Welf Duke Heinrich, the Duke of Brunswick and the son of Heinrich the Lion, built a castle to protect his brother Otto IV's interests in the Moselle region.
