Duissern

Duissern [ˈdʏsɐn] is one of the oldest districts of Duisburg. It has 14,685 inhabitants and is part of the Duisburg district of Duisburg-Mitte. The district borders to the east on the district of Speldorf in the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr.

The city of Duisburg was one of those medieval towns whose area was not limited solely to the area within the city walls. The city's territory also included the districts of the land and forest areas belonging to the royal court of Duisburg. On this land outside the city walls were three settlements: Wanheim, Angerhausen, and Duissern. Since these places were managed by the council of the city of Duisburg, they were called council villages. The council village of Duissern was a street village on the Westphalian Hellweg, the old Frankish military road that ended at the confluence of the Ruhr into the Rhine coming from the east.
