During World War II, the medieval city center of Frankfurt was almost completely destroyed after bombardments by the Allies. After 1945, the city was largely rebuilt in a modern style and grew to become the beating heart of the European economy. As many as 180 different nationalities live here. The German stock exchange, the headquarters of the largest banks, the European Central Bank,… they are all located in one of the many skyscrapers of Bankfurt. High wages in the financial world also influence the housing market. Living in the city center is becoming increasingly expensive. While about 1.4 million people work here daily, the city itself has ‘only’ 750,000 inhabitants. Many employees live outside Frankfurt and commute daily using the excellent public transport. The tourist attractions of Frankfurt are close together in the old city center. Surrounding them, the suburbs and many green parks stretch out in all directions.
