Lübeck is a city that is definitely worth setting aside a day to a weekend for. This fortified city was the beating heart of trade around the Baltic Sea and the Hanseatic cities. From here, the salt that was transported from Lüneburg to numerous places around the Baltic Sea and beyond was shipped out. The result of all that trade was an unprecedented wealth in the city, much of which can still be seen and admired today. The writers and brothers Heinrich and Thomas Mann, the latter of whom received the Nobel Prize for Literature, were both born here. You can also still see the half-melted bell from St. Peter's Church, a relic of the heavy bombardments from World War II.
