Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle is located above Hohenschwangau near Füssen in the southeastern Bavarian Allgäu. Construction began in 1869 for the Bavarian King Ludwig II. as an idealized vision of a medieval knight's castle. The designs were created by Christian Jank, while Eduard Riedel and Georg von Dollmann handled the execution. The king lived in the castle for only a few months, as he died before the completion of the complex. Neuschwanstein was originally referred to as New Castle Hohenschwangau, and it has held its current name since 1886.[1] The owner of the castle is the Free State of Bavaria;[2] it is managed and maintained by the Bavarian Administration of State Castles, Gardens and Lakes.

Neuschwanstein is the most famous of Ludwig II's castles and one of the most well-known attractions in Germany. It is visited by about 1.5 million[3] tourists annually. Often referred to as the "fairy-tale castle," Neuschwanstein is open to visitors almost year-round[4]. The architecture and interior design are influenced by the romantic eclecticism of the 19th century; the castle is considered a masterpiece of historicism.[5] An inclusion of the "Ludwig Castles" Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, and Herrenchiemsee in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites[6] is sought after.
