Anholt is a former town in Germany, near the Dutch border. Today it belongs to the municipality of Isselburg. In the year 1169, a lord of Anholt was mentioned for the first time, who is noted in the loan book of the Bishop of Utrecht. This first identifiable lord of Anholt was Stephen I of Zuylen (1234 - 1249). Anholt developed into the lordship of Anholt and immediately attained the status of an imperial territory. On May 25, 1347, Stephen IV of Zuylen (1313 - 1347) granted city rights to the area of the town and the castle of Anholt. From 1234 to 1402, the lords of Anholt were the counts of Zuylen, from 1402 to 1641 the counts of Bronkhorst-Batenburg, and since 1641 the princes of Salm (from 1743 Salm-Salm). The town of Anholt was transformed into a fortified town. Three wall towers, a city wall, moats, and ramparts provided security in the town during troubled times. Not much remains of the historical buildings since the last days of World War II.
