Marian Chapel

The Catholic Marienkapelle in Rhöndorf, a district of the town of Bad Honnef in the Rhein-Sieg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, is a baroque rubble stone building from 1714. It is located in the middle of Rhöndorfer Straße. The chapel is a protected monument.
The chapel has a predecessor building, which is believed to have been built before 1624 based on a bell dated to that year. This small shrine was destroyed in 1689 by the troops of the French King Louis XIV. Elsewhere, the new Rhöndorfer chapel was built from 1714 onwards, with the land donated by Count Wilhelm Franz Johann Bertram von Nesselrode – the then provost in Oberpleis. Some citizens of Rhöndorf participated in the construction, including financially. The ceremonial inauguration of the chapel, which was named Maria's Visitation, took place on June 8, 1716. In 1778, a baroque wayside cross was erected on the east side. With the construction of the new parish church of St. Mary’s Visitation from 1903 to 1905, the chapel lost significance. In June 1930, a memorial for the fallen of World War I was created on the south side of the chapel. In 1935, a comprehensive renovation of the building was carried out. Since 1982, occasional services have been held there again.
