Fröruper Mountains

The Fröruper Berge in the municipality of Oeversee is a nature reserve located between Schleswig and Flensburg in the northern part of Schleswig-Holstein.
The nature reserve has existed since 1936. It is situated southeast of the district of Frörup and is managed as part of the large-scale nature conservation project Upper Treene Landscape. The largely forested Fröruper Berge, with its re-wetted bog area known as Budschimoor or Butschimoor, is a glacial moraine landscape. The terminal moraine was formed during the last ice age. Enormous glacial pressure pushed larger stones, such as gravel and large boulders, along with other deposits into a ridge. The extraction of stones and gravel, which continued in places until the 1960s, has altered part of the Fröruper Berge. The gravel plant was the largest gravel plant in the northern region of the country around 1920. The extracted stones were used for coastal protection of the North Sea as well as for the construction of the Hindenburg Dam. The transport of the stones was carried out via a tramway, which connected the Fröruper Berge to the main line. Around 1950, reforestation of the Fröruper Berge began.
