Camp Autumn Forest

The Herbstwald camp was an alternative accommodation of the Deputy General Command VI Army Corps – Wehrkreiskommando VI Münster, which was built in the Baumberge during the Second World War under this camouflage designation.
After the Royal Air Force's carpet bombing of Münster in July 1941, the order was given to explore an alternative accommodation outside Münster. When, in 1943, after a long break, the air raids increased again and caused ever heavier destruction, the decision was made to build a new camp. At the beginning of 1944, construction work began in the wooded area Im Drosteloh in the Baumberge near the former Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff Youth Hostel. The construction sites were shielded from enemy aerial reconnaissance by wire nets with leaves, as well as the excavations from the air-raid tunnels and from the blasting.
