The zoo has been in existence since October 7, 1964. It is located in the south of the city of Perleberg in the Vorderheide, a part of the Perleberg city forest. To the north, the Perleberg cemetery and animal cemetery are connected, and to the west lies the forest settlement across the Wilsnacker Chaussee.
More than 400 animals live in the zoo on the 15-hectare area. Among them are large European predators such as brown bears, wolves, and lynxes. Other native large mammals include bison, wild boars, and red deer. Fallow deer can be seen in an outdoor enclosure. More exotic mammals include Bactrian camels, guanacos, guinea pigs, kangaroos, and monkeys. Additionally, there is a petting area with sheep and goats. The Perleberg zoo also houses numerous bird species, including several types of owls, parrots, pheasants, geese, emus, and the endangered ibis.
