Bützow Correctional Facility

The Bützow Correctional Facility is located on an area of about 270,000 square meters in Bützow, in the district of Dreibergen, in the northwest of the small town of Bützow, which is situated in the Rostock district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is the largest of the six correctional facilities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The Bützow prison is one of the oldest and most notorious detention facilities in Germany. Construction began in 1835 with the purchase of the property. In March 1838, prisoners from the fortress of Dömitz began building Prison House 1. The penal institution was opened on April 25, 1839, as the Dreibergen penitentiary, and the prison house was occupied by 60 inmates. The following construction phase lasted almost ten years until 1847. By that time, in addition to the men's section and a men's isolation section, a temporary women's house had also been completed. In the immediate surroundings, staff houses and wings for office space were constructed. In 1847, the institution had a capacity of 294 inmates, of which 60 were women. In 1860, another men's detention house with isolation cells was built, and in 1883, the women's penitentiary was put into operation, located on an area separate from the men's houses. From 1902 to 1906, another major renovation of the men's detention houses took place in order to operate the facility more effectively. More single cells were created for accommodation, but also workspaces, bathrooms, staff rooms, and a chapel were obtained by connecting the individual detention houses. The extension for the hospital was also completed in 1906.
