Herderschule Kassel

The Herderschule Kassel is a secondary school for students from the cooperative and integrated comprehensive schools of the Kassel-Ost school network as well as for students from secondary schools and high schools in the city of Kassel. It is located in the Unterneustadt of Kassel.
The Herderschule was founded in 1955 as the first high school for boys and girls in Kassel in the premises of the Heinrich-Schütz-Schule and moved in 1960 as a reform high school with grades 5-13 to its current location in the Maulbeerplantage in the eastern part of Kassel, where there had previously been no high school. Guided by reform pedagogical concepts, the school focused on the "holistically educated student," with special emphasis on promoting each student’s individual abilities to ensure equal opportunities in the social environment. The school was not understood merely as a place for pure knowledge transfer, but aimed to strengthen personal educational profiles through a diverse range of learning offerings. Expressions of these efforts included the "daycare" with lunch and homework supervision, "interest groups," and a musical emphasis in the school’s offerings. An open relationship for conversation and discussion between students and teachers was also part of the concept. In 1976, the Herderschule transitioned from a full high school to an independent secondary school.
