Petersberg Monastery

The Petersberg Monastery on the highest elevation of the Saale district, the Petersberg in the municipality of Petersberg, has been a monastery of the Community of Christ Brotherhood Selbitz since 1999. Intended almost a thousand years ago as the hereditary burial place of the Wettins to cultivate the Wettin commemoration of the dead and to consolidate the place as a religious and ideological representative centre of the Wettin exercise of rule, it houses, among other things, the grave of the founder of the uninterrupted Wettin line of rule in the male line until the end of the monarchy in 1918: the tomb of Conrad the Great and his wife Luitgard, born von Ravenstein.
Until the late Middle Ages, the Petersberg was only known as Lauterberg. Archaeologists suspect a fortified hilltop settlement on the mountain, which was expanded into a Slavic place of worship during the 8th and 9th centuries. Apparently, a refuge castle with its castle walls enclosed a Slavic sanctuary, which was thus located on the highest elevation of the country settled by Slavs between the Harz and the Oder, the Ore Mountains and the Baltic Sea.
