The Freimann Mosque was built from 1967 to 1973 as the seventh mosque in Germany and the first mosque in Bavaria in the district of Fröttmaning in the Munich district of Schwabing-Freimann.
The foundation stone was laid on October 6, 1967, and the inauguration took place on August 24, 1973. Construction quickly stagnated due to lack of financial resources. In 1968, the mosque and cultural center were only in the initial construction phase. The first Ramadan celebration took place on November 20, 1971, in the still unfinished mosque. In 1973, Libya provided the missing funds needed for completion. The construction costs of around 3 million Deutschmarks were financed by fourteen Islamic states, with 1.6 million coming from Libya. The planning was carried out by architect Osman Edip Gürel together with his wife, interior designer Necla Gürel. The mosque was designed as a parabolic shell structure with a free-standing minaret that is 33 meters high. The builder and sponsor is the Islamic Community in Germany e.V., or IGD for short. The prayer hall accommodates 450 people, including 100 on the women's gallery.
