Peterhof Chapel

The Peterhof Chapel, also known as the Holy Cross Chapel, is part of the Peterhof, which was established in 1492 and was the Freiburg city quarter of the St. Peter Monastery in the Black Forest. This building complex is also the oldest building of the University of Freiburg.
The chapel was built by the monks towards the end of the 16th century and is only accessible from within the building, as it was intended solely for the monks as a place of prayer. The name of the master builder is unknown; the architectural style shows a mixed form of late Gothic and simply designed Renaissance. Despite a major renovation in 1731, the interior furnishings of the chapel were preserved, a rare example of Mannerism. The master of the stucco decoration was possibly Wendel Nufer or Neuffer, based in Herrenberg, who created the similar stucco work for St. Luzen Monastery Church in Hechingen. The statement that the sculptor Julius Seitz, together with Franz Xaver Kraus, "carried out the furnishings in 1892, produced sculptures and stucco works, and with the help of the painter Ambros Müller renewed the paintings," is to be understood as restoration, not the creation of new sculptures and stucco.
