The Hospice St. Christoph am Arlberg is a complex of buildings in St. Christoph am Arlberg in the municipality of St. Anton am Arlberg in Tyrol.
The hospice, built in the 14th century, is said to have been constructed by a pig herder named Heinrich, an orphan from Kempten in the Allgäu region. According to legend, Heinrich worked at Arlen Castle near Nasserein. As people frequently suffered fatal accidents while passing through Arlberg, he began to collect donations for the construction of a shelter. Duke Leopold III of Austria is said to have donated a piece of land at the Arlberg Pass, where Heinrich, in 1386, along with his assistants, established the hostel, which for a long time served as the only facility to provide travelers protection from the whims of the weather. To ensure the continued operation of the facility, Heinrich founded the Brotherhood of St. Christoph. Over time, the increasing number of members not only collected donations in their own country but also in France, Italy, Poland, and Switzerland, among others. Finally, in 1397, Pope Boniface IX permitted the construction of a chapel.
