Description

The Dachshügel Großdraxdorf is an archaeological site near Großdraxdorf, a hamlet of the town of Berga/Elster in the Greiz district of Thuringia. In terms of area, it is the largest archaeological monument in the northern Vogtland.
The area of the settlement and rampart facility is located on the Eselsberg, about three kilometers south of the municipality of Wünschendorf/Elster and the adjacent fields of the village of Großdraxdorf to the south. The plateau rises with its wooded steep slopes up to 90 meters above the valley floor of the White Elster. At the western edge of the plateau, the church path from Großdaxdorf leads to Veitsberg, passing by the well-known rock Weiberstein, which is famous in several legends, and initially heads towards the northern tip of the mountain spur. The Devil's Pulpit located there is also a place known through legends. In the thicket at the edge of the cliff, the sparse remains of a medieval spur castle have been identified, which was referred to in older cartographic works by the place name Burgstatt for the adjacent area to the south. The name Dachshügel was chosen for the prominent remains of the former rampart castle.
