The New Water Tower is a landmark of Dessau. The water tower is 63.50 m high and its water tank has a capacity of over 1000 m³. The New Water Tower is no longer used for water supply.
As early as 1615, there was a water supply for the city of Dessau via leaden and wooden pipes, but most Dessau residents had to use the public fountains on streets and squares or they had their own well. It was not until after 1870 that the city was supplied by an extensive water supply network. In 1875, the foundation stone for the first Dessau water tower was laid in Heidestraße, but its water was highly ferrous. Today, the Old Water Tower houses the State Main Archive of Saxony-Anhalt, Dessau Department.
