The Deichtorplatz is a major traffic junction in the southeast of Hamburg's city center, situated between the main train station, the Kontorhausviertel, and the Speicherstadt. As part of Hamburg's main road network, it connects the federal highway 4 running through here with Ring 1. The square is named after the Deichtor, a former city gate in the Hamburg city fortifications, and is known for the listed Deichtorhallen.
The roughly rectangular square covers about 1.8 hectares and was established in its current size in 1962/63 in connection with the newly constructed East-West street at the time. The federal highway 4 runs underneath the northern part of the square in an east-west direction, thus connecting Amsinckstraße in the east with Willy-Brandt-Straße in the west. The northern flank of the square is currently marked by the southernmost of the four City-Hof skyscrapers, and the Klosterwall, as the eastern end of the city wall ring, leads onto the square. Also located at the northern edge of the square is the southern access building to the Steinstraße subway station. In the northwest, Burchardstraße branches off towards the Kontorhausviertel, in the south the Oberbaumbrücke connects to the Speicherstadt, and on the east and southeast sides, the historic Deichtorhallen are spread out.
