Since the year 1700, religious refugees from France formed their own church community. Over time, the congregation grew through newcomers from other areas. From 1896 to 1899, the church along with the attached parsonage was built according to a design by Georg Weidenbach and Richard Tschammer. The entire complex is considered the first example of a unified community building. It was awarded the 1st prize at the Paris World Exhibition.
The church building, designed in the style of the Neo-Renaissance with its distinctive 73-meter high tower, is located on Tröndlinring north of the historic city center. The consecration of the church took place on March 12, 1899. During the heavy air raids on Leipzig on December 4, 1943, it was damaged, and the reconstruction lasted until 1969.
