Depuis l'année 1700, des réfugiés religieux venus de France ont formé une propre communauté ecclésiale. La communauté a grandi au fil du temps grâce à des arrivées en provenance d'autres régions. Entre les années 1896 et 1899, l'église avec le presbytère attenant a été construite selon un projet de Georg Weidenbach et Richard Tschammer. L'ensemble du complexe est considéré comme le premier exemple d'une construction communautaire uniforme. Il a été récompensé par le 1er prix à l'Exposition mondiale de Paris.
Le bâtiment de l'église, construit dans le style néo-Renaissance avec son clocher marqué de 73 mètres de haut, est situé au Tröndlinring, au nord du centre historique. La consécration de l'église a eu lieu le 12 mars 1899. Lors des violents bombardements sur Leipzig le 4 décembre 1943, elle a été endommagée, et la reconstruction a duré jusqu'en 1969.
