Jewish Museum of Culture Veitshöchheim

The Jewish Cultural Museum and the synagogue of Veitshöchheim are located at a historic site in the town center of Veitshöchheim and were inaugurated in 1994 after an eight-year renovation period. The complex consists of the synagogue built in 1730, which had been repurposed in the meantime and is now fully restored and suitable for liturgical use, a museum building in a former Jewish residential house, and a new building for temporary exhibitions and events. The life of Jews in Franconia, which has significantly shaped the region for three centuries, is represented in various ways at the Jewish Cultural Museum Veitshöchheim.
Between 1727 and 1730, a Jew from Veitshöchheim had the synagogue built. The external architectural form is adapted to local styles, while the interior features a baroque Jewish prayer house with a central bimah and Torah ark. In 1940, the synagogue was converted into a fire station. During renovation and remodeling work in the synagogue, large parts of the old interior furnishings were found in the floor in 1986. With the help of these original fragments and photographs from 1926, the Veitshöchheim synagogue can be completely restored. It is thus the only fully furnished historical synagogue in the Unterfranken region.
