Muhre

The Muhre, also called Muhrgraben, is a stream in the Zehdenick-Spandau Havel lowland in the northern part of Brandenburg.

Before the start of the major Luch improvement from 1718 to 1724 under King Friedrich Wilhelm I, the Muhre had a continuous and largely natural course with a variety of meanders in its upper and mid-stretch. Today, the source and mouth of the original stream cannot be clearly reconstructed. Its north-south course is traceable parallel to the Havel from the Hohen Bruch or the forest area of Sarnow northwest of Oranienburg, through the Leege Bruch up to the forest area of Staritz northwest of Spandau. In the area of the current Berlin city and state border, it makes a 90° turn to the west. After passing Alt Brieselang, the traces of the original Muhre disappear north of Nauen into the expanses of the Havelland Luch. As a result of extensive drainage and canal construction works, the Muhre is now completely canalized. Since the construction of the Velten harbor in 1910/11, it has been divided into two separate river courses. There is no longer a direct connection between the upper and lower reaches.
