Fort Malakoff

The caponniere Malakoff, also known as Fort Malakoff, in Mainz was part of the Prussian fortress of Mainz and, within it, a component of the left bank fortifications along the Rhine. It was constructed in various stages of development starting in 1843 as part of the Rhine straightening project and was later expanded.

Fort Malakoff was built as a multi-story artillery platform. The construction and renovation period of this building, located on the left bank of the Rhine, spanned from 1843 to 1873, mostly during the second fortification phase. The name Fort Malakoff was given to the structure due to the Crimean War in 1855 in Russia. In 1863, ownership of the building transferred from the fortress to the Hessian Ludwig Railway. From that point on, it was made available as affordable housing for socially disadvantaged residents.
