Teistungenburg Abbey

Teistungenburg Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery near Teistungen in the district of Eichsfeld, in Thuringia, Germany.
Founded in 1260 as a daughter monastery of Beuren Abbey for ten nuns, the monastery gained its independence from Beuren at the end of the 13th century. In 1525, the monastery was almost completely destroyed during the Peasants' War, and the nuns fled to Duderstadt. The Thirty Years' War also affected the monastery, which became completely impoverished after its plundering in 1643. In 1720 the reconstruction began, the monastery church of St. Peter and Paul was consecrated in 1724. In March 1809, the entire complex was sold as part of compensation payments, and on October 16, 1809, the last two nuns left the monastery on the instructions of the authorities of the Kingdom of Westphalia, which thus ceased its existence for good.
