Ratsgymnasium Rheda-Wiedenbrück

The Ratsgymnasium Rheda-Wiedenbrück is a grammar school in Rheda-Wiedenbrück . It is one of the oldest grammar schools in the region.

The Ratsgymnasium was founded on 17 November 1637 by the citizens of the city of Wiedenbrück with the consent of the Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück as the Gymnasium Marianum as a higher boys' school. The first place of instruction was the so-called "Wippermann-Haus" on Wiedenbrücker Markt, where the pupils were initially taught Grammatica, Syntaxis and Rhetorica by two teachers. First and foremost, Latin was taught to enable students to compose verses and prose in classical Latin within five years. At the end of 1639, only 2 years after its opening, the High School was moved from the Wippermann House on the Market Square to a house of the city on the church square, which had previously belonged to a "Johan Tuman". The relocation was necessary because at that time quarters were needed for the "Obristwachtmeister Remondt". Around 1651, the grammar school already had about 50 pupils, this number remained the average number of pupils until the beginning of the 20th century.
