The Schellenberger Tower served as a defense tower for the border fortification of the increasingly autonomous Berchtesgaden region starting from 1193/94 in today's Marktschellenberg at the transition to Salzburg, and after the secularization until 1823 for the stationing of a royal Bavarian border garrison.
