Fort Kugelbake is a former naval fortress in Cuxhaven in today's spa district of Döse. It is located on the last headland at the mouth of the Elbe behind the sea dike near the eponymous sea mark of the Kugelbake. The fort was built between 1869 and 1879 in a strategic position at the mouth of the river to block the access to the Elbe with its 14 coastal guns from enemy warships, at that time the French ones. Today it is the last surviving naval artillery base on the German North Sea coast.
