Memorial in the Wolfenbüttel prison

The memorial in the Wolfenbüttel prison is a documentation and memorial site for the victims of National Socialist justice, which is located within the Wolfenbüttel prison in the city of Wolfenbüttel. The Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation has been the sponsor of the memorial since it was founded in 2004.
The Wolfenbüttel prison was built in 1790 as a forced institution for convicts with minor sentences. Initially, a building built in 1506 as part of the Wolfenbüttel fortress served as accommodation. In 1820, the "Old House" was built as a new state prison. In 1873, a building was built for the individual accommodation of prisoners, which was called the "Grey House". In the years 1882 to 1884, further buildings were added, including the "Gate and Administration House", a second cell building, the "Red House", a farm building, a military hospital and a steam boiler and engine house. During the existence of the Free State of Braunschweig from 1918 to 1945, the Wolfenbüttel prison was the central prison of the state.
