Island wall

The Inselwall is a street in Braunschweig. It runs along the southern edge of the Inselwallpark.
From 1803, the fortifications of the Braunschweig Oker Island were transformed into parks under the direction of Peter Joseph Krahe. On the inner side of these ramparts, promenades were constructed, whose names today end with "wall." These works began in the northwest of the Oker Island in the former district of Neustadt, in the area of today's Inselwall. The Bammelsburg located there was also demolished around 1830. The street was built as a promenade with winding paths, while the later constructed promenades were mostly straight. It was named "Insel-Promenade." As one of two buildings, a house was built in 1804 at the current address Inselwall 1 for a shoemaker; it no longer exists today. From 1805, the Bierbaum Villa was built in the east of today's Inselwallpark, which was the birthplace of the writer Ricarda Huch in 1864 and was damaged in World War II and later demolished. It long carried the house number 16. The street was named after "Bierbaums Insel," a former ravelin in the west of the park. In 1845, it was still largely undeveloped.
