The Kennedy Bridge and Storm Surge Barrier are a combined hydraulic structure in Bremerhaven. The lift bridge crosses the Geeste River. The barrier protects the city from flooding caused by storm surges.
The bridge was built starting in 1960, just a little downstream from the Old Geeste Bridge. As a single-leaf lift bridge with six traffic lanes, it relieves the Old Geeste Bridge. With a clear passage width of 24 m, it allows for shipping traffic to the now-closed shipyards on the Geeste and to the Elbe-Weser shipping route. The bridge is 28.4 m wide. The bridge flap is 29.3 m long and can be mechanically lifted up to Beaufort 9. After the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, it was named after him on January 30, 1964. The VBN lines 440, 508, 509, HL, and S run over the bridge.
