Süsternkapelle

The Süsternkapelle was the church of the Augustinian nuns in Herford, of which only remains of the north wall bear witness today.

In 1442, the Fraterherren of the Herford Fraterhaus decided to bring sisters from common life to the city, through whose convent they were then also to exercise spiritual leadership. In 1449, the existence of a convent of sisters in Holland is documented for the first time. In 1456, the sisters were allowed to build a chapel by the Archbishop of Cologne, Dietrich II von Moers, as administrator of Paderborn, which was to be dedicated to St. Mary. In 1459, the sisters had to accept the Rule of St. Augustine. In 1491, the city council was able to limit the rapidly growing convent to 50 sisters, because the work of the women, especially their textile production, was unwelcome competition for the town's craftsmen.
