The Pluto mine was a coal mine in Herne in the Wanne-Eickel district. The mine was initially operated under the name St. Nicolaus Mine and was later renamed Pluto Mine. The name of the mine is inspired by the Greek god Pluto, the god of the underworld. The Pluto mine was one of the founding members of the Rhenish-Westphalian Coal Syndicate. In addition, the Pluto Mining Joint Stock Company was one of the founding members of the Association for Mining Interests. In the second half of the 19th century, the mine was one of the most significant mines in the Arnsberg administrative district.
