The Dahlhausen lock is one of 16 locks built at the behest of King Frederick II for shipping on the Ruhr. It is located on the southern bank of the Ruhr in the district of Dumberg in the city of Hattingen. The Bochum district of Dahlhausen is situated on the opposite bank.
From 1774 to 1775, the royal chamberlain Clemens August Baron von Elverfeldt had the lock built from wood. In 1817, it was rebuilt in wood again. In 1844, the lock walls made of sandstone blocks followed. The gates are made of riveted iron sheets. The lock was operated by hand.
