Johannenhof Estate

The Johannenhof estate is a workers' housing estate built in 1914 according to the plans of the architect Vallentin between the Duisburg districts of Hochheide and Homberg on the left bank of the Rhine. Today, the settlement is a listed building and is part of the Route of Industrial Heritage.
Originally, the settlement was planned for the administrative officials of the Rheinpreußen colliery, while the workers of the colliery lived in smaller and less elaborately designed residential units in the Rheinpreußen settlement adjacent to the west behind the colliery railway. By the time the Johannenhof was completed, however, mining in the municipality of Homberg had already declined to such an extent that there was a lack of potential tenants and therefore better-off workers, foremen and foremen could move in.
