Kaiser Wilhelm Ring

Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring is the street name of a 771-meter long section of the Cologne Rings, which runs between Hohenzollernring and Hansaring in the Cologne Neustadt-Nord.
Originally, the city wall ran along Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring, after which the city began the systematic demolition of the remaining sections following the explosion on June 11, 1881, at the level of the Gereon Gate. The open space left by the city wall provided room for a wide, boulevard-like street. According to the plans of city architect Josef Stübben, the ring road in the section of Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring was widened to 65 meters and equipped with 25-meter-wide green strips featuring garden parterres, fountains, and monuments. The 0.55-hectare green area was created around 1895 by master gardener Adolf Kowallek as a symmetrically arranged decorative space with geometric ornaments. He also created the green strips at Theodor-Heuss-Ring, Sachsenring, and Ubierring to a similar width. A section of Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring is the widest street in Germany, measuring 114 meters.
