Directly at the Dutch border lies the picturesque water castle Rimburg. Its origins date back to a knight's castle from the 12th century. The multi-part castle complex with the mighty round tower was built on the foundations of an old Roman fort. It received its neo-Baroque facade only in 1899.
The castle has a turbulent history behind it, not only because of the legends surrounding the infamous robber knight Wilhelm von Mulrepas, who is said to have lived here. Due to its strategically advantageous location, the building was fiercely contested during wartime and was integrated into the defense line of the West Wall during World War II. The unusually strong outer defense ring, still partially visible today, as well as the wide moat are evidence of the former knight's castle's important function as a defensive structure throughout its history. Today, it is privately owned and cannot be visited.
