Merode Castle, which dates back to the twelfth century, is located in the Mérode district of the municipality of Langerwehe in North Rhine-Westphalia, at the northern end of the Rureifel. It is considered one of the most beautiful moated castles built in the Renaissance style in the Rhineland. [citation needed]. It is established that from 1174 until today it has been the property of the lords, later counts and currently princes of Merode.
