St. Mary's Church

Descripció

The St. Mary's Church in Pasewalk is a hall church from the 14th century in the style of North German brick Gothic. It is one of the most significant brick churches in Northern Germany.
An earlier predecessor building was made of field stones and was first mentioned as a market church in 1178. The three-nave hall church from the second half of the 14th century was built between 1325 and 1350 in the style of North German brick Gothic. The oldest parts were the foundations of the tower and parts of the west wall from the period after 1250. From 1325 to 1350, the nave was constructed with its seven rectangular bays in the middle nave; in the east, a 5/8 choir closure. During this time, the tower was raised by a third floor and adorned with rich blend structures. At the beginning of the 15th century, a polygonal chapel was added to the north of the building. In the Thirty Years' War, imperial troops burned down the tower on August 7, 1630. It collapsed into the nave and destroyed the vaults in the nave as well as the roof. Until this war, the parish of St. Mary's Church and St. Nicholas Church were independent and each had its own pastor. The latter, however, also had to preach in St. Spiritus. Frederick William I. enabled the rebuilding in 1734, during which the vaults were renewed by 1736. The altar, an organ, and a confessional from the St. Mary's Church in Stettin that was destroyed by lightning in 1795 were brought here. Between 1841 and 1863, a restoration of the church and the chapel took place with a richer design of the facades according to plans by Friedrich August Stüler. During this, the tower was also raised by one more floor with a gallery according to the plans of the land builder Brockmann. In addition, architectural errors that had occurred during the construction in 1734 were corrected. The church tower received an octagonal tower helmet, which shaped the cityscape into the 20th century. Furthermore, an organ by Kaltschmidt was built, which at the time was one of the largest organs in Pomerania.
