Windmill Hill

Since February 2002, the nature reserve Windmühlenberg has existed in the Berlin district of Gatow in Spandau. The relatively small area of about 5.1 hectares is characterized by the endangered and now rare vegetation type of sand dry grassland flora in Berlin, a remnant of steppe vegetation that was once widespread in the Berlin area.
The 52-meter-high Windmühlenberg is located about four hundred meters west of the Havel and borders directly to the east on the historic center of Gatow, which has retained its village character to this day. On the other three sides, the hill is surrounded by the settlement at Windmühlenberg. Behind the small settlement, the extensive former percolation fields of Gatow lie to the north, the landscape protection area of Gatower Feldflur to the west and southwest, and the Gatower Heide to the south. Following the settlement areas, the Spandau districts of Wilhelmstadt are located to the north and Kladow to the south. Nearly three kilometers to the west, the Berlin state border runs parallel to Federal Highway 2 towards Brandenburg, leading to the district of Seeburg in the municipality of Dallgow-Döberitz in Havelland.
