Bullengraben

The Bullengraben is a moat in Berlin's glacial valley that was cultivated as early as the 7th century. It is located in the Berlin district of Spandau and leads from the old village centre of Staaken over about five kilometres east to the Havel, into which it flows, in the last section piped underground, north of the Spandau castle wall. Used for centuries to meliorate the damp lowlands, the ditch has served as a drainage ditch since the 1960s to absorb rainwater from the surrounding Spandau districts. The development of the areas around the Bullengraben reflects part of Spandau's settlement history.
Between 2004 and 2007, the ditch, which had been canalised in the 1960s and 1970s and subsequently neglected, was rehabilitated by DB ProjektBau as part of a replacement measure. Parallel to the ditch, the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary created the Bullengraben/Lindenufer green corridor, which is up to 200 metres wide, with playgrounds and sports fields, recreation areas, bridges, footbridges and a path that goes all the way to Elsflehter Weg. The Bullengrabenweg, which is about four metres wide and covered with smooth asphalt, is available to pedestrians, cyclists and skaters. In the last section, the green corridor includes the castle moat and an approximately 100-metre-long promenade on the Havel. In addition, biotopes in the green corridor such as the Stieglake basin and meadow basin as well as feeder ditches such as the Egelpfuhlgraben were renaturalised. In 2008, Deutsche Bahn received the Gustav Meyer Prize for the creation of the entire facility, which has been awarded every two years since 1995 for excellently planned public green spaces and parks. The prize bears the name of Johann Heinrich Gustav Meyer, Berlin's first municipal horticultural director.
