The Havelschanze leads from Neuendorfer-/Streitstraße eastwards as a cul-de-sac to Lake Spandau, where it ends as a cul-de-sac with a turning hammer on the Havel. Only the two pedestrian streets Am Bootshaus and Zum Alten Strandbad continue to lead to the immediate shore area.
The Havelschanze has only borne its name since January 29, 1958. It is derived from one of the nine redoubts that surrounded the city and citadel of Spandau in the north as part of the Spandau Fortress. The Havelschanze was the ninth and easternmost bastion of the complex.
