Erlengrund

Erlengrund is a locality directly located on the Havel in the Berlin district of Hakenfelde in Spandau. It is still situated north of the Bürgerablage and has two weekend settlements within its area. The allotment garden colony 'Erlengrund' was – just like the neighboring 'Fichtewiese' – until 1988 a Berlin exclave, surrounded by Brandenburg territory. Due to the Berlin Wall, these weekend colonies were separated from what was then West Berlin from 1961 to 1988 and "walled in," thereby limiting access for the settlers to their properties.

The 'Fichtewiese' colony of the Sports and Weekend Community 1921 leased 3.6 hectares of land south of the Papenberge from a Gatow farmer for its club grounds and purchased the area in 1937. The meadow was named after the Workers’ Sports Club Fichte. In 1928, the allotment garden colony consisted of a meadow area that was marshy in the western part and included an eastern wooded corner that allowed access from the Havel river path. The area was outside the urban boundary of Berlin, thus outside the city limits since 1920. The municipality of Nieder Neuendorf was responsible for planning law, and from 1923 Hennigsdorf in the district of Osthavelland.
