Friedrichsthal is located north of the center of Oranienburg in a wooded area by the Havel river. The large district of Oranienburg includes the settlements of Fichtengrund, Neu-Friedrichstal, and Dameswalde.
The first documented mention of the place as "Grabstorff" is dated back to 1350. The name Friedrichsthal comes from Friedrich I, who had the hunting lodge Friedrichsthal built on the banks of the Havel and renamed the place after himself. The palace was already demolished in 1873. Friedrichsthal was a colonist village, increasingly also a fishing village. As early as 1782, 15 clockmakers from French Switzerland, members of the Reformed Church, settled in Friedrichsthal. They moved into houses built specifically for them and established a manufactory. By the middle of the 19th century, the unprofitable clockmaking trade was discontinued in the village. With the extension of the Malzer Canal in 1836 to the drawbridge in Friedrichsthal, many families of boatmen moved here, earning their living by operating cargo barges.
