Fountain Monument Bad Liebenwerda

The monumental fountain is an architectural landmark and landmark in the spa town of Bad Liebenwerda in southern Brandenburg. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the late Gothic church of St. Nicholas on the city's market square, opposite the town hall.
In 1909, the Liebenwerda Warriors' Association and Curt Ziehlke, editor-in-chief of the Liebenwerdaer Kreisblatt, commissioned the architect Karl Jost to design a fountain figure. They wanted a memorial that differed in shape from the war dead memorials that were common at the time. The sculptor Loew of Elberfeld modelled the bronze figure of a 1.35-metre-tall "German Michael" in the form of a fresh, vigorous and stocky young man, leaning on his sword and who should be seen "to be able to stand on his own two feet". It was intended to represent the new German Michael, "to whom the vilified drowsiness of old Michael is completely alien." It was cast in the bronze foundry of Lauchhammer AG. The Dresden sculptor G. R. König took over the sculptural work. The limestone deliveries, as well as the masonry work on the well house, which was carried out with a mansard roof, were carried out by the company J. Röder from Randersacker near Würzburg. A water feature was led on all four sides to the height of the pedestal and ornaments at the upper ends of the pillars represented the allied armies of Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony and Württemberg in the fight against Napoleon III in the form of soldiers' helmets. The roof of the monument was designed as an imperial crown made of copper. The structure was 5.25 m high and the outermost distance between the lowest steps was 4.5 m.
