Until its closure in 2010, Berliner Bürgerbräu was the oldest brewery in the city. The striking brewery building is located on the Müggelsee in the Köpenick district. The brand continues to exist and is now part of the Radeberger Group.
Since 1753, there has been evidence of "jug rights" at the location of the brewery north of Lake Müggelsee. With the development of the areas on the shore by King Frederick II, the Friedrichshagen estate and the corresponding infrastructure were built. From 1852 onwards, the areas of the royal estate were privatised. In 1869, Hermann Schaefer acquired the remains of the estate, including the associated brewing and grinding rights. This date is considered the founding year of the brewery.
