Sachsenburg Castle

Sachsenburg Castle rises near Frankenberg/Sa. on a rock above the Zschopau River. The castle complex, established no later than the early 13th century, was transformed into a palace in the 1480s. The structure is one of the few examples of a fully preserved late Gothic residential palace in Saxony.
The Lords of Sachsenburg were first mentioned in a document in 1197. It is uncertain whether a castle already existed at that time. However, around 1210/30, the existence of the castle can be reliably evidenced through archaeological finds. The builders were apparently the Lords of Mildenstein. After the dismantling of their rule in connection with the Mildenstein tithing dispute by Margrave Heinrich the Illustrious in 1232, the rule passed into the possession of this Wettin.
