School 1 Weißwasser

The school complex of School 1 Weißwasser in Weißwasser/Oberlausitz has housed the Pestalozzi Primary School Weißwasser since 1992 and is listed as a heritage site. From 1992 to 2005, the 1st Secondary School Weißwasser was also located here. Prior to 1940, it was called the Evangelical Community School Alt-Weißwasser, in 1949 the Evangelical Secondary School Alt-Weißwasser, and until 1992 POS Alt-Weißwasser.
On January 24, 1772, the first school was founded in Weißwasser. 24 children were taught in a house by the first teacher Georg Beck. In 1817, the first salaried teacher began his service at the school in Weißwasser. Classes were held until 1868. In 1867, a school building was constructed on the current school property, which housed not only two classrooms but also the apartment of the cantor and the later second teacher. With the increase in the number of school-age children, additional school buildings were constructed in the district near the train station, and the building in the old village was expanded in 1901 to create an apartment for the principal and the fourth teacher. 200 children could be taught in four classrooms. The growing population of the city of Weißwasser soon necessitated a new school building. Heinrich Kühlmann, the then principal, advocated for the new school building in Weißwasser in 1912.
